I had this idea earlier in the Spring 2010 semester about "Art Creating Art." Since I work at the Museum of Fine Art on Campus, I'm constantly surrounded by varying pieces of art, but the collection the oddly caught my eye was that of the European Art collection. From my untrained eye, the Art of each period seems to have a similar feel and even flow to the Music of each period which lead me to the idea, "What if Mozart had walked into a museum at that time and was inspired by a painting to write a piece of music?" As a musician this idea intrigued me because there are some stunning pieces of art in the Museum here on campus which constantly inspire me to work on new ideas musically, as well as all forms of art. I really believe that "Art Creates Art" in varying and sometimes ambiguous ways. The best part about the idea, to me, is that it would be chamber groups playing specific pieces of music directly related to specific pieces of art and in the museum space. This idea moved me enough to approach the Museum staff about this idea, as well as a few Music faculty and everyone seemed really excited about the idea.
The end product of this will bring Music Students to the Museum and will bring Museum goers and Art Students to the Music building. Ideally I would like to showcase the beauty of not only the art of the time but also the music of the time.
